What is culture
Aspects of human nature that include language, thoughts, actions, customs, beliefs and values deriving from ethnic, racial, social or religious affiliation (shared beliefs)
Every culture has beliefs about health, treatment, disease and healthcare
Variation and cultural groups
Not everyone who shares the same culture are the same, differences include
- educational level
-financial resources
-sexual orientation
-location
-preferred language
Influence of culture on personal beliefs and attitudes
Culture will influence formation of beliefs, being passed down through people with authority - such as pass on central core values, formed based on the culture they identify themselves with and use these values to make important life decisions (i.e. how to deal with illness/prevent disease)
Cultural norms and competency
Norms: shared expectations of how someone will behave based on their culture. This will have an influence on how people communicate and this is the same when accessing or delivering healthcare
•Aussies – “generally” laid back, open and direct
Competency:
challenging one’s own cultural assumptions and beliefs, developing empathy for people from other cultures, and applying specific communication and interaction skills to engage with each individual.
•Be culturally sensitive = addressing an induvial by a specific title, asking permission for certain procedures, avoiding eye contact, avoiding physical touch, ensuring a chaperone is present or using an interpreter.
Government policy and regulations
Forming belief, people look to authority figures for guidance. the government passing a law for the wearing of bike helmets the individuals within the population will begin to believe that bike helmets are important and necessary.
Attitude that gov is trying to protect them
