What is Maslows Hierarchy of Needs?
A theory of motivation that states five categories of human needs that dictate an individual’s behaviour. The basic needs are at the bottom and the higher level needs are at the top. A person can only move onto addressing the higher needs once the basic ones are met
What are the five categories of human needs?
From bottom to top
-Physiological needs
-Safety needs
-Social needs
-Esteem needs
-Self actualisation
What are Physiological needs?
Needs required to sustain life: air, water, food, sleep
If these needs aren’t met, an individual will be determined to satisfy them
What are safety needs?
Once the physiological needs are met, our attention turns towards safety and security to be free of threats
These needs include
-living in a safe area
-medical insurance
-job security
-financial reserves (savings)
What are social needs?
*first of the higher needs
Related to interaction with others and can include
-friendship
-belonging to a group
-giving and receiving love
-intimate relations
What are esteem needs?
After finding that they belong, an urge to attain importance emerges
This can be done through internal or external motivators
Internal motivators could include
-accomplishment
-self respect
External motivators could include
-recognition
-attention
-social status
What is self actualisation?
The top need that isnt fully satisfied
Self actualised people tend to have motivation such as
-truth
-wisdom
-justice
-meaning
To reach here you must fulfil all the other needs
