What is the recommendation for alcohol use during pregnancy?
NO DRINKING (used to be 1/2 units but now its safer to abstain)
Can you drink alcohol whilst breastfeeding?
Yes - as long as you wait about an hour after drinking until you breastfeed
What is the recommendation for cannabis use during pregnancy?
Do not use - as well as causing restricted birth weight, developmental delays etc, they can cause mental health problems in the mother
What is neonatal abstinence syndrome?
A group of problems that occur in a newborn who was exposed to addictive illegal or prescription drugs while in the mother’s womb, and is now going through withdrawal
What are some signs of domestic abuse?
- Multiple admissions to A&E
- Repeated presentations with mental health problems
- Late booking/poor attendance
- Overbearing partner at all meetings
- Injuries (bruises etc)
- Woman appearing evasive in front of partner
- Poor obstetric/gynae history
How can medical professionals screen for domestic abuse?
All woman should have one consultation, alone, with a lead to professional to facilitate disclosure
What is FGM?
All procedures that involve total or partial removal of the external female genitalia for non medical reasons.
What are the different types of FGM?
- Clitoridectomy
- Excision - removal of clitoris and the inner labia minora
- Infibulation - narrowing of the vaginal opening by creating a seal, formed by cutting and repositioning the labia, after removing the clitoris and labia
You can also get pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping or burning the area
What are the effects of FGM?
Death, broken bones, chronic pain, dyspareunia, repeated infection, bleeding, incontinence, mental health problems, problems during childbirth
What is the treatment for FGM?
Deinfibulation - surgical opening of the vagina
