Informal care
Care provided by a relative or friend
Primary care
Provided by health professionals at the first or primary stage of health care. Much of the healthcare provided remains in the primary care stage.
Voluntary organisations
Non-statutory bodies, set up and run by their members rather than by government. They complement state provision of health and social care services
Personal care
Offered in the individuals home for help with bathing, toileting, dressing, companionship, hairdressing, manicure and feeding
Residential care
Registered with the department of Health’s Commission for Social Care Inspection. The staff in a residential home can help with personal care such as washing, going to the toilet, taking a bath, getting up or dressing. All meals are provided and there are activities and outgoings
Welfare to work
A range of strategies to help the unemployed into work and off benefits
GP
Stands for general practitioner, a family doctor
NHS
A government run service which provides doctors (GPs), hospitals and community health services which meet health care needs of individuals
Social services
A wide range of support and care services which look after our health and welfare. They are also referred to as social care services.
Multidisciplinary care
Where care is provided by a range of different agencies and professional carers
Secondary care
Provided if a health condition requires further treatment
Pharmacists
Experts in medicines
Home helps
People who help with some domestic tasks including cleaning and cooking. There are charges for this service
Social services
A wide range of support and care services which look after our health and welfare. They are also referred to as social care services
Care plan
A written document that outlines how the needs of an indivildhal
