Enviromental Issues Flashcards
Waste hierarchy
Species the following order of preference for dealing with our wastes, with those towards the top of the list more desirable than those towards the bottom. In order, the hierarchy is reduce, refuse, recover, recycle, compost, recover energy, disposal
Incinerated
Waste which is burnt. This is also called energy from waste
Recycling
The processing of waste-manufactured products to provide the raw materials to make new ones
Ozone layer
A layer in the stratosphere (at approx 20 miles) that contains a concentration of ozone sufficient to form a protective shield against most ultraviolet radiation from the sun
Methane gas
Created when organic waste breaks down. It has the potential to be explosive and is also a significant greenhouse gases icy can contribute towards global warming
Waste
What people throw away because they no longer need it or want it
Land filled
Means waste which is buried in the ground
Sustain
Keep in existence or maintain
Global warming
An increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere
Acid rain
Rain containing acids that form in the atmosphere when industrial gas emissions (especially sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) combine with water
Environment
The combination of external physical conditions that affect and influence the growth, develop, etc and survival of organisms, and the circumstances or conditions that surround us
