hearing child born to deaf parents —> learnt speech through social interactions and TV, fully learnt how to talk once he started school

- non verbal children
- some cultures do not talk to children during their critical development stage —> samoan tribes, some will only let children talk to other children and learn from each other and use a very gentle parenting style but they still become articulate and fluent language users without adult input
