Define compliance
An individual conforms to attitudes/behaviours without fully agreeing with them.
Define identification
Individual adopts certain behaviours because they want to be associated with a certain person/group
Define internalisation
Individual accepts influence because attitudes/behaviours are consistent with own values
What is informational social influence?
Occurs when an individual accepts information as evidence about reality
What is normative social influence?
An individual goes along with majority without accepting attitudes & behaviour
What are the variable affecting conformity?
1) Group size - little conformity with 1 or 2, increased by 30% with 3 confederates
2) unanimity - conformity dropped from 37% to 5% with 1 confederate giving correct answer
3) Task difficulty
Define obedience
When someone acts in response to a direct order from a perceived authority figure
What situational factors affect obedience?
1) proximity - dropped to 40% when in same room & 30% with learner hand on shock plate
2) location - dropped to 48% in rundown offices
3) uniform - conveys power & authority
Define the agentic state
A person sees themselves as an agent carrying out another persons wishes
Define the agentic shift
When a person shifts from acting autonomously to the agentic state
What were milgrams binding factors?
1) reluctance to disrupt the experiment - obliged to continue because they’ve been paid
2) insistence of authority
3) pressure of surroundings - prestigious uni
Define legitimate authority
A person who is perceived to be in a position of social control in a situation
What is an authoritarian personality?
A distinct personality pattern characterised by conventional values and submission to authority
What is the F scale?
Developed by Adorno (1947) to measure authoritarian tendencies
Define Locus of Control
A persons perception of personal control in a situation
What is external Locus of control?
Individuals who believe behaviour & experiences are a result of external factors in which we have no control over
What is internal Locus of control
Individual believes they are responsible for experiences & behaviours rather than external factors
Give 3 reasons why internals are better at resisting social influence
1) they are more achievement oriented - more likely to be leader than follower
2) better at resisting coercion
3) active seekers of useful info - rely less in opinion of others
Define minority influence
A form of social influence where members of the majority change their behaviour as a result of a persuasive minority
Name 3 factors vital for successful minority influence
1)consistency - stable view over Long period of time cause others to reassess situation more carefully
2)commitment - degree to which members of minority are dedicated to a cause
Important as it suggests courage, certainty & confidence
3)flexibility - need to be able to compromise
Minorities are typically powerless so need to negotiate
