Social Influence - Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What is resistance to social influence?
The ability to withstand the social pressure to conform or obey. It can be influenced by situational or dispositional factors.
What did Asch find about social support?
Social support enables an individual to resist conformity pressure from the majority.
What is a locus of control?
This is the perception of how much control people they have over their own behaviour.
It is measured on a continuum from high external to high internal.
Who discovered locus of control?
(Rotter, 1966)
What is meant internally in terms of locus of control?
The belief that events in your life, good or bad, are a result of controllable factors such as beliefs, attitudes, preparation and effort.
What is meant by external in terms of locus of control?
The belief that events in your life, good or bad, are a result of uncontrollable factors such as the environmental, other people or a higher power.
What is an evaluative point of locus of control?
A strength of the explanation is that there is empirical evidence - Holland (1967) replicated Milgram’s baseline study and measured whether ppts were ‘internals’ or ‘externals’. He found that 37% of internals did not continue, whereas only 23% of externals.
Give and evaluate a limitation of locus of control.
A limitation of the explanation is that there is contradictory research - Twenge et al (2004) analysed data from LOC studies between 1960 – 2002. The data showed that over this time span people have become more resistant to obedience but also more external.
