Solomon Asch (1951, 1955)
Conformity research
Method:
- total of 50 students
- groups of 7-9 people
- participants needed to verbally announce which line (1,2 or 3) matches the target line.
- they were in a group with confederates
- 18 different trials
- in 12 of them confederates gave incorrect answers
Results:
- control group was 99% of the time right
- nearly 75% went along with the group
- 3 confederates onwards had the most influenceable effect
- after combining the trials, one-third conformed
- 5% were always swayed by the crowd
- 25% consistently defied majority opinion
