compliance
Involves publicly acting in accord with social pressure when privately disagreeing. It does not change the person’s underlying attitudes towards things, just their public behaviour (temporary)
conformity
a form of social influence that results from exposure to the majority position
social roles
the behaviours that are generally expected of a person due to their position / role in society
obedience
following orders from someone perceived to have authority over a person
informational social influence
humans rely on others to gain factual information and will most likely happen they are unsure about a topic or the influencer seems to be an expert (internalisation)
agentic shift / state
person sees themselves as an agent for carrying out another persons wishes
identification
person adopts behaviour of a group, publicly and privately - once you leave this group the attitudes may fade
authoritarian personality
personality traits characterised by submission to higher authority & contempt for those lower in authority than themselves
legitimate authority
person or institute seen to have a legitimate claim to have power in a situation or context
internalisation
true change of private views to match group views - public & private (permanent)
minority influence
minority tries to change the view of majority - requires consistency, flexibility, & commitment
locus of control
people differ in their beliefs about whether outcomes of their actions are dependent on what they do or on events outside their personal control
normative social influence
people feel the need for social approval and have a fear of rejection - behaviour is in public so they think they are being seen to be conforming to the group
social change
when legislation demonstrates the change of the majority belief system due to minority influence
social norms intervention
attempts to alter behaviour by showing that norms are misperceived - in order to reduce risky / undesirable behaviours
