interactional synchrony
when 2 people interact they tend to mirror what the other person is doing
reciprocity
the infant responds to the actions of the adult and vice-versa
primary attachment figure
the person who has formed the closest bond with the child
imprinting
an innate readiness to develop a strong bond with the mother which takes place during a specific time in development
classical conditioning
learning through association - a neutral stimulus is consistently paired with an unconditioned stimulus and eventually produces a conditioned response
continuity hypothesis
the idea that emotionally secure infants go on to be emotionally secure, trusting, and socially confident adults
monotropy
the idea that the one relationship that the infant has with their PAF is of special significance in emotional development

a mental model of the world which enables individuals to predict and control their environment - relates to a persons expectations about relationships

the loss of emotional care that is normally provided by a primary care giver
institutionalisation
the effects of institutional care, how time spent in an institution such as an orphanage can affect the development of children
privation
failure to form an attachment at all during the sensitive period
critical period
a biologically determined period of time to form attachments, outside this window such development will not be possible
