Biopsych Key terms Flashcards
Peripheral Nervous System
the part of the nervous system that is outside the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System
comprises the brain and spinal cord. it receives information from the senses and controls the body’s responses
Autonomic Nervous System
Governs the brain’s involuntary activities and is self regulating. It is divided into the sympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch
Motor Neurons
from synapses with muscles and control their contractions
Relay Neurons
are the most common type of neuron in the CNS. They allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate with each other
Neurotransmitter
chemical substances that play an important part in the workings of the nervous system by transmitting nerve impulses across a synapse
Sensory Neurons
carry nerve impulses from sensory receptors to the spinal cord and brain
Synaptic Transmission
the process in which one neuron communicates with another
Endocrine System
the glands and organs that make hormones and release them directly into the blood so they can travel to tissues and organs all over the body
Pituitary Gland
the ‘master gland’ who’s primary function is to influence the release of hormones from other glands
Sympathetic Nervous System
a network of nerves that helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” response
Parasympathetic Nervous System
a network of nerves that relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger
