from a person or group of people

- Solomon Asch (1951)
- 123 all male sample
- Confederates – gave incorrect answer when matching lines
- Naïve pp – Asked after confederates to see if they would conform
Findings:
- Naïve pp agreed with confederates’ incorrect answers 36.8% of the time
- 25% of participants never gave the wrong answer
