Social - individual, situational and cultural factors (obedience) Flashcards
Situational - momentum of compliance
start with small requests and then build them up to have a bigger impact i.e. Milgram’s shocks increasing by 15v each time.
Situational - proximity
Closer the authority figure the higher the level of obedience
Situational - status of authority figure
needs to be seen as legitimate in order to make an impact
Situational - personal responsibility
if responsibility is placed on the authority figure, obedience is more likely to increase. Although if it is their own personal responsibility they are less likely to obey due to them having to deal with the consequences.
Individual - personality
Authoritarian - usually seen as more submissive to authoritarian personalities so are more likely to obey.
Individual - locus of control
internal LOC, believe they are responsible for their own actions so are less influenced by others.
external LOC more influenced by authority figures and do not believe they are responsible for their own actions.
Individual - empathy
those with higher empathy levels are less likely to harm someone asked by an authority figure.
Gender
May expect females to be more obedient due to stereotypes. However Milgram found similar levels between the two, females just displayed higher levels of anxiety. (Sheridan + King showed all women shocked puppies after being asked by figure)
Culture - Individualistic cultures
Independent, work towards their own goals rather than doing what is best for group, seen to be less obedient.
Culture - collectivistic cultures
They do what is best for the whole group and work co-operatively, seen to be more obedient.
