Social Identity Theory Flashcards
who investigated social identity theory ?
Tajfel and Turner
what do tajfel and turner think about social categorisation ?
they believe that it is a basic instinct and that just the existence of an out group can cause prejudice.
what happened in tajfel et al. (1971) - experiment 2 ?
48 boys from a comprehensive school in Bristol (used in previous experiment) were separated into three groups of 16
how were the boys from tajfel et al. (1971) - experiment 2 separated ?
the boys were shown paintings by Klee and Kandinsky (not told that the paintings were done by them) and then asked what they thought of the them - HOWEVER, THEY WERE NOT SEPARATED BY THIS PREFERENCE - SEPARATED RANDOMLY
what were the groups from tajfel et al. (1971) - experiment 2 ?
1) Klee group
2) kadinsky group
what were the results of tajfel et al. (1971) - experiment 2 ?
the boys of each group picked the option of points that gave their own group the lowest, but also have the biggest difference for the other group - i.e. the in-group would get 7 and the out-group would get 1 (the other options were 12 and 11 or 19 and 25)
what are the three stages of social identity theory (in order) ?
1) social categorisation
2) social identification
3) social comparison
what is social categorisation ?
Social categorization is the process by which people categorize themselves and others into differentiated groups
what is social identification ?
when people derive their own sense of who they are and how they relate to others by the way they view other individuals and groups around them
what is social comparison ?
in-group members make comparisons between themselves and out-group members where look on the in-group favourably, generating self-esteem for the in-group
