What is social identity?
The sense of self in terms of group membership.
-Positive social identity increases self-esteem
e.g. being in a group
what is social categorisation?
Categories people based on shared characteristics
e.g age, race, gender
what is social identification?
Adopting the identity of the group that has been joined
what is social comparison?
comparing the joined group with other groups
Strengths of the SIT?
Explains why people feel more empathy towards people similar to them
Explains bias towards i groups and against our groups that often lead to conflict
