all societies contain people of unequal status. the higher a persons status within a group/ societ the more social power they have.

what are the 5 types of social power?
A
- Reward: based on ability to reward a person who complies with desired behaviour. Ex/ Teachers reward students with results
- Coercive: ability to punish a person for failure to comply. Ex/ Fines and imprisonment to control behaviour
- Legitimate: our acceptance of a person as being part of an established social order. Ex/ Teacchers, parents, police
- Referent: refer to a personn for direction, we want to be like them. Ex/ celebrities, sporting hero’s
- Expert: recognise a person has knowledge and expertise. Ex/ Doctors, lawyers

Collectivist: value group needs above individualist interests
Individiualist: value individual needs over group interest
Horizontal: people are seen as mostly equal status
Vertical: people are seen to have varying levles of societal status
