Upward: can lead to inspire/ motivate us, can lead to feelings of inadquency
Lateral: support us to make accurate judgements of ourselves
Downard: improves our mood + evaluation of ourselves
what is social connectedness?
the belief that we belong to a group + generally feel close to other people
what is social comparison theory?
suggests that to gain an accurate understanding of who we are, we make decisions, evaluations and judgements about ourselves in relation to those around us
how do social comparison theory and social media affect us?
while social networking does have a positive impact on social connections, prolonged exposure can lead to low self-esteem beccause of our tendency to mmake comparisons
How does media create addictive behaviour?
inreased acess to smart devices and internet has resulted in new forms of addiction, namely gaming disorder and online gambling disorder
