A

Louis Riel was the leader of the Métis, and he wanted to ensure language, religion, and land rights were guaranteed for prairie residents. John A MacDonald wanted the land because he didn’t want the Americans to take it, so he sent Smith as an emissary. Smith offered money, food, shelter, and employment to Métis leaders, and assured them that the Canadian government would respect land titles, this was all a lie.
