What were the three similar traits all first nations groups shared?
Live in peace and harmony, respect nature, share land and resources
What was oral traditions and who practiced it?
Oral traditions is when elders would orally teach young first nation people about their culture, history, languages and ways of life. This would be passed on by generation and remembered by repeating it daily, also recorded in wampum belts.
What three first nation groups did we discuss?
First nations, Inuit, Metis.
Where did they live?
North and central América.
What were unique things about their group?
Belief in a creator, Used consensus in decision making,
Used oral teachings, elders were respected, respect for the environment.
What is consensus?
An agreement reached by a group as a whole.
What is ethnocentrism?
thinking one’s own group’s ways are superior to others
Worldview of the first nations
First nations lived in peace and harmony with nature, share land and resources, cooperation brings group strength, each person is sacred and complete.
Worldview of the Europeans
Gain allies to use strategically, land and resources private property, keep the peace, self interest, capitalism/competition.
Where do the Mi’ kmaq live in?
Wigwam houses.
Where do the Iroquois live in?
Longhouses.
