When arousal stimulated by the presence of an audience has a negative effect on performance
Personality on inhibition and facilitation
Introverts have sensitive RAS can become over aroused easily, causing social inhibition
Extroverts don’t become over aroused easily causing social facilitation
Stages of learning on inhibition and facilitation
As arousal increases so does performance of dominant response
For cognitive and associative this is wrong so inhibition
For autonomous this is well grooved so facilitation
Simple skills
Don’t require much information processing so audience doesn’t cause information overload, social facilitation can occur
Complex skills
Audience can cause overload causing social inhibition
Gross skills
Don’t require precision arousal from audience facilitates
Fine skills
Performer needs high precision which is difficult with arousal so social inhibition occurs
