What is a dysfunctional family?
A family that does not provide some or all of the benefits of a family
5 reasons why some families may become dysfunctional?
- Stress due to problems
- Poor parenting skills
- Controlling behaviour
- Parents neglect children
- Inconsistent in teaching children how to behave socially
What does a stressful family enviroment do to children?
Disadvantage them and make it hard to develop self-confidence
How can parental divorce or seperation negatively affect children?
- Affects their self-esteem and self-confidence, leading to emotional distress, moodiness and depression
- Lack resiliiance so more easily influenced by peers —> risky behaviours
- Poverty—> underachievement in education
How can parental divorce or seperation positively affect children?
- Relief as less arguing so less stress
- Increase in support from extended family
- May get step-siblings
What does exposure of high levels of family conflict do to a child?
They become agressive and bully other children in the family
Why do children involve themselves in sibling rivalry/bully siblings?
- They try to gain control and power in a household in which they feel helpless and powerless
- Parents may also cause sibling rivalry
What are the three different parenting styles
- Authorative
- Authoritarian
- Permissive
What is the authorative parenting style?
- parents are not overly strict and children brought up to respect authority
- more resiliant and conformist
What is the authoritarian parenting style?
- parents have high expectations and strict rules
- children become rebellious and problematic
What is the permissive parenting style?
- parents don’t have any demands for their children and reluctant to implement rules/values
- children lack self-control due to no set boundaries
Why may some parents struggle to parent?
- struggle with emotional issues
- lack emotional intelligence
- unaware of the power they hold
- difficult to meet needs of children—-> neglect/abuse
What is bullying?
a repetitive behaviour intended to hurt an individual emotionally/physically
State 4 possible affects of bullying:
- Low self-esteem
- Stress
- Depression/anxiety
- Worried
Why do people do self harm?
To release feelings of guilt and emotional pain
