How do infants develop self-esteem from 0-18 months?
- Having basic needs met, e.g. closeness, love and comfort
- Primary caregiver provides support and attention
- Shows they are important, safe, and secure
How do infants develop self-esteem from 18months- 2 years?
- Learning new skills and being praised for them
- Shown love and treated as special by primary caregiver
- Know what they look like and where they belong
Describe what a positive self-esteem looks like?
- Easier time in relationships, can resist peer pressure
- Optimistic view of the world
- Positive feedback from parents when they do something successfully
- Parents encourage to accept failures as well as success
- Parents ask child for opinions and introduce to social settings

- Become overly concerned about their physical appearance
- Difficulty fitting in with peer groups
- Leads to poor school achievement

The quality of social interaction and influence of caregivers in early childhood

- Parents who make positive comments about a childs appearance
- Constant praises from parents, teachers etc.
What may a negative self-image look like?
- Unwanted physical characteristics like acne, and changes in body shape
- Influenced by social media
