Social Control Flashcards
Definition of social control
Social control is defined as the control that a society (majority) excerts upon the individual (minority) in it. This issue relates to how psychological findings and themes can be exploited, with good or bad intentions, to change people’s behaviour
Social Control
social approach
Benefit:
- research findings eg Sherif - SOG = reduce prejudice
- Therefore eg bring ethnic groups together to common goal of reducing climate change, reducing racially driven prejudic = peaceful society
Drawback:
- militant groups exploit sherifs findings - create hostility through emphasising wealth, status and power
- Therefore conflict and predjucide behaviour encouraged through social manipulation and control
Social Control
Learning approach
Drawbacks:
- psychological therapies eg flooding - AO1 CC
- Therefore shouldnt be used - manipulates behaviour causing distress and poss psych harm
However:
- patients opt for it and give permission
- also other therapies using CC - eg SD - AO1
- Therefore form of constrol but patient leads therapy = ethical and this form benefits = treats phobias
Social Control
Biological Approach
Drawbacks:
- knowledge about role of bio factors eg agg and addiction - knowledge cause behaviour = predict development of what traits
- Therefore labelling violent = unfair treat and social control through monitoring/therapy - if unnessasry = unethical
However:
- such traits seen from psych research eg raine (AO1)
- therefore monotor and therapy (social control) = beneft society and individual by keeping out of situations = trigger agg behaviour
Social Control
Clinical
Drawbacks:
- drugs chem straight jacket - not given options and incapable of question doctors/treatment (vul patients) = social control
- therefore may benefit but involuntary, doctor has power over patient - vul = no proper consent = morally and ethically wrong
- similarly medication can be to sedate patients for quite life of caregivers = abuse patients rights and social control = not for the benefit of the individual
