Scientific Flashcards
Biological Approach
Scientific
* - Eg Raine AO1
* - Therefore used PET scans to test hypothesis and find murderers had structural diff eg PFC and amygdala
Scientific
* - Eg Barzman et al - hormones in saliva related to agg and found amount of cortisol higher in boys who agg
* Therefore levels of cortisol in quantitative data that is objective and can be measured to see its influence on agg
Psychodynamic Approach
Not scientific
* - Eg freuds work was based on case studies eg little hans behaviour during phallic stage towards his father
* - Therefore freud interpreted qualitative and so behaviour is subjective
Not scientific
* - Freud explained concepts that have very little scientific credibility such as the unconscious, id, ego, superego
* - Therefore concepts not measurable and cannot be tested
Clinical Psychology
Scientific
* - Concepts can be measured - eg dopamine hypothesis can be tested by analysing dop levels to understand it as a cause of SZ
* - Therefore scientific as levels of dopamine are objective and can be measured to see that dop has a role in causing SZ
Not Scientific
* - Cant tell whether increased dop sensitivity casue of SZ or whether developing illness changes brain chem
* - Therefore no cause and effect can be established as influence of dop on SZ is a correlational relationship
Not Scientific
* - Social drift hypothesis - hard to separate environmental factors to see if they cause sz or if factors eg unemployment are a result of sz
* - Therefore also no cause or effect can be established as relationship between social factors and SZ is correlational
Not Scientific
* - Eg sue and sue found many asian american don’t like to take about emotions and admit they have a problem
* Therefore diagnosis not S if patients are not giving detailed information on their symptoms so clinicians can’t give valid diagnosis
Social Psychology
Scientific
* - Milgram - well controlled procedures AO1
* - Therefore reliable…accurate conclusions drawn
Not Scientific
* - Milgram AO1
* - Therefore lacked task ecological validity and not Generalisable
