Q
what are the components of agency theory
A
autonomous state, agentic state, moral strain, agentic shift
2
Q
what is autonomous state
A
- act of own free will
- not obeying anyone doing what you want
- actions are your own responsibility
3
Q
what is agentic state
A
- act as an agent for authority figure
- obey demands of the authority figure and act on their behalf
- the authority figure is responsible for your actions
4
Q
what is moral strain
A
feel anxious and uncomfortable due to demand but dont want to disobey the authority figure
5
Q
what is agentic shift
A
if you shift from autonomous state it is called agentic shift it alleviates moral strain
6
Q
strength of agency theory
A
- supporting from milgram - 65% of ps obeyed - may ps blamed experimenter for shocks suggesting they were in agentic state - more credible theory of obedience as it suggests its right
- useful to understand events in history e.g. holocaust to prevent these again in the future
7
Q
weakness of agency theory
A
- conflicting from milgram as not all ps obeyed to 450v so no everyone was in agentic state - must be other factors affecting how obedient someone will be
- other factors affect obedience e.g. personality, upbringing etc
- reductionist as ignores all other explanations
- deterministic as assumes everyone will shift to the agentic state
