cognitive methods Flashcards
what is inferential statistics
- we want to be sure that our results are caused by the thing we are manipulating and not a coincidence
what is probability
the chance of something happening
- expressed as a number between 0-1 written as p
- if results are because of your study and not just by chance IV did affect DV
why do you do a stats test
- let us know whether results are based on luck/chance or because there is actually a link between IV & DV
what is a type 1 error
false positive
p value is too low
think results were significant but they weren’t
what is a type 2 error
false negative
p value too high
think results aren’t significant but they are
when do you use a mann whitney
when a study
- has independent measures design
- looking for a difference
- uses ordinal/interval data
when are results significant
when calculated value is smaller than critical value
when do you use a wilcoxon
ordinal data
looking for a difference
repeated measures
