Explicit Processes
conscious thoughts are deliberative, effortful, slow, under intentional control
Implicit Processes
unconscious thought, intuitive, automatic, effortless
Dual Process Model
models of behaviour that account for both implicit and explicit processes
Person Perception
-Process by which individuals categorize and from judgements about others
Thin Slices of Behaviour
judgement made based on very small sample of a person’s behaviour
Self Fulfilling Prophecies
first impressions affects one’s behaviour, which then affects other people’s behaviour, leading one to ‘confirm’ initial impression
i.e. being nice to someone you think seems nice, they are nice back, reinforces belief that they are nice
False Consensus Effect
tendency to project self concepts onto the social world
Naive Realism
tendency to assume that the way we see things is the way they are
Self Serving Biases
biased was of processing self relevant information to enhance our positive self evaluation
i.e. take credit for success, blame others for failures
Better than Average Effect
way of boosting self esteem
Internal/Dispositional Attribution
observer explains behaviour of actor (i.e. driver that cut you off) in terms of innate quality of that person (being a jerk)
External/Situational Attribution
observer explains actor’s behaviour as a result of the situation (ie tired because they just worked a long shift)
Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE)
tendency to over emphasize internal attributions, and under emphasize external factors
In-groups
groups we feel positively toward and identify with (i.e. friends)
Outgrips
groups we don’t identify with
In group Bias
people see their in-groups as superior to their outgroup
Minimal Group Pradigm
subjects placed in groups based on meaningless distinctions to see if Us vs. Them thinking would occur
Stereotype
cognitive structure, set of beliefs about the characteristics held by a specific social group
Prejudice
negative attitudes towards other groups
Discrimination
behaviour that disfavours members of a certain social group
Contact Hypothesis
social contact between members of different groups is important to overcoming prejudice
