Social Behaviour Network Flashcards
What are 3 main behaviours controlled by the SBN
Aggression
Parental Care
Reproduction/ Sexual Behaviour
How many brain nuclei are in the SBN?
6
What are the 6 nuclei involved in the SBN
Lateral septum
Medial extended amygdala/ bed nucleus of the stria terminalis
preoptic area
anterior hypothalamus
ventromedial hypothalamus
periaqueductal gray/ central gray/ tegmentum
What does the Lateral Septum (LS) do in the SBN?
- emotional processing
- stress response
- organise mammalian kinship behaviour
- regulates affects (i.e: reward, feeding, anxiety, fear, socialibility, memory etc)
In the SBN, what does the preoptic area (POA) do?
- contains neurons that are sensitive to subtle change in hypothalamus/ core temperature
- receives somatosensory input from skin and thermoreceptors in spin
- regulates social behaviour
- regulates social reward
- mediates sexual behaviour
- mediates aggression
- mediates parental care
In the SBN, what does the anterior hypothalamus (AH) do?
integrates thermal information from body thermoreceptors
In the SBN, what does the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) do?
- regulates female sexual behaviour
- regulates feeding
- energy balance
- cardiovascular function
In the SBN, what is the periaqueductal gray/ central gray/ tegmentum involved in
- pain & analgesia (pain-relief)
What area of the SBN is most involved in the pain inhibitory system?
Periaqueductal gray/ central gray area
