Social Approach: Types of Aggression

Hostile Aggression?

Angry and impulsive aggression. Accompanied by physiological arousal (eg heart rate increase). This type of aggression may be physical or verbal.​

Instrumental Aggression?

Uses aggression to achieve goals. It is planned and not usually accompanied by physiological arousal. It can be physical or verbal and usually used to achieve a response from another.​

Violent Aggression?

Using physical force to cause injury to other people. (All violence = aggressive, but all aggression ≠ violence) ​

Verbal Aggression?

Answer 4

Using words to cause psychological harm. Can be instrumental (eg to win an argument) or hostile (eg impulsively sending an angry text)​
