Social Approach: Conformity Flashcards
What is Conformity?
A change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a group of people.
What is Normative Social Influence?
We agree with the behaviour of others because we want to be accepted/avoid rejection.
What is Informational Social Influence?
We agree with the behaviour of others because we believe it is correct. We accept it because we want it to be correct.
What was Solomon Asch’s study into conformity?
An easy test given to applicants, one applicant was a participant, the others were apart of Solomon’s idea, presented was 3 lines and a line named x, one of the three lines matched x, but the rest didn’t, all the subjects with Solomon chose the wrong one, causing the test subject to also select the wrong one.
What were the findings of Solomon Asch’s study?
That the participants said they chose the wrong answer to fit in with the group in order to not appear “peculiar” or be ridiculed (NSI). A small number genuinely thought it was correct (ISI).
