Social Approach: Influence of others on self Flashcards
What is Self-Concept?
Perception of oneself. An awareness and set of beliefs about yourself and your relationships to others.
What is Self-Efficacy?
An individuals confidence in their abilities to achieve success.
What is Self-Image?
A person’s awareness of mental and physical characteristics, based on positive and negative beliefs about themselves.
What is Self-Esteem?
How a person values themselves and their attributes. How much they accept and like themselves.
Study on Self-Efficacy?
Bandura (1997) suggested two main ways self-efficacy is achieved.
Social modelling. You observe others succeeding at a task, and you are encouraged to believe that you can do the same. If you believe yourself to be similar to these role-models, the effect is greater.
Social persuasion. Encouragement increases self-efficacy as it assists the individual to overcome doubts. (However, the inverse is true- discouragement reduces self-efficacy).
