4450 participants on the nyc undergound were targeted by a group of males who were dressed as either a drunk man with a bottle or an old man with a cane
They would fall over and then two observers would record down who helped; gender and race
60% of helpers were white and there was a tendency for same race help
90% of helpers were male
Females would say ‘it’s a males job to help’
Bystander effect was not apparent in fact the larger the group the more help
The cane victim was helped the most – piliavin explains this with the arousal: cost reward model
