Deviance
Behaviour that falls outside the norms or what is thought to be acceptable; goes against the moral values or laws of the sport
Negative deviance
Deviance that has a detrimental effect
Positive deviance
Deviance where there is no intention to cause harm or break the rules
Sportsmanship
Qualities of fairness, following the rules, being gracious in defeat or victory
Gamesmanship
Bending the rules/laws of a sport without actually breaking them
Commercialisation
Making something available on the market; using something to make a profit
Media
The main means of mass communication (television, radio, newspapers and internet)
Perceived
What someone thinks or feels to be the case
Participation rules
The amount of people taking part
What are 3 advantages of commercialisation?
Provides many sources of funds for individuals, group and competitions
Can support a sport and national and at international level
Brings sport to wider audience, so raises awareness
What are 3 disadvantages of commercialisation?
Beauty parade effect - good-looking athletes get most support while other good sportspeople miss out
Seat prices for events may be too expensive for many people
Audience may find enjoyment for sport interrupted or spoiled - for example, from ad breaks
