Who are the baby boomers?
Period lasting between 1946-1965. Government program spending increased during this period. Many of these people found good jobs when they entered the labour market and are some of the more affluent segments of the population.
Who are the baby bust?
Period lasted from 1967-1975. Birth rates dropped significantly. Employment opportunities were not so great after this generation left school. As this generation matured, there was a decline in demand for public services and consumer goods. Also a decline in government revenue when this cohort reached working age.
Who are baby echo?
Children of the baby boomers. Not as large as the baby boomer generation. Echo generation grew up with the Internet and technology. Pressure on this generation to do as well as, or better than their parents (education, jobs, income, technology, standards of living).
What is ageism?
Usually defined in terms of prejudice and discrimination toward older people. Older people may be stereotyped as being conservative, feeble, and argumentative.
How are old people treated in Canadian and the US?
Seen as a burden, not an asset to society. Many retired people are “put out to pasture” like old crows or horses.
What are degenerative diseases, and what are they associated with?
Examples of degenerative diseases include cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. They are usually associated with aging and may be inherited, acquired due to hazardous working or living conditions, or may be the result of poor diet and lifestyle choices.
Why do people work past 65 now?
In the 1990’s, some baby boomers were encouraged to put more money in their retirement funds through mutual funds on the promise they could retire early (55). Some lost money, and now work past 65.
What was the pre-industrial outlook on elder care?
People lived in extended families and children took care of their parents.
What is the industrial outlook on elder care?
The dominant ideology is individualism and independence. If only people can’t look after themselves, they are put in to institutions.
