CSOC 112 Final 2 Flashcards
What is conflict theory concerned with in education?
- Inequality
- Correspondence principle
- Reproduction of class in equality
What is inequality? (conflict theory)
Equality is embedded in the design of capitalist society, and educational reforms will not work unless this issue is addressed first.
What is the correspondence principle? (conflict theory)
Schools are structured to resemble workplaces, where grades are like wages, in both cases, people are motivated by external rewards.
What is reproduction of class inequality? (conflict theory)
Students from higher social class backgrounds are more likely to seek higher education than those of lower social class backgrounds. Rising tuition rates at post-secondary institutions make it more difficult for students of lower class backgrounds to attend.
What are concerns that feminist theory has for education?
- Early studies
- Contemporary studies
- Gendered post-secondary trends
- Educational institutions as gendered workplaces
Early studies? (feminist theory - education)
Early studies focused on gender roles in and outside of the classroom and a curriculum that was biased toward male role models.
Contemporary studies? (feminist theory - education)
Attempt to show how the masculine and feminine roles embedded in the curriculum are ideologically driven as curriculum content focuses on white middle class heterosexual men and women.
Gendered post-secondary education trends? (feminist theory - education)
Female students are a slight majority, but female undergraduate university students tend to be concentrated in education, humanities and social sciences.
Educational institutions as gendered workplaces? (feminist theory - education)
Women are more likely to become teachers in the lower elementary school grades, while men are more likely to each the higher grades
What is symbolic interactionist theory concerned with education?
Examining the meanings attached to school practices and the symbolic aspects of education such as curriculum materials, language, and knowledge.
What is the self-fulfilling prophecy? (symbolic interactionist theory - education)
How teachers categorization of students affect students’ educational experiences as well as their opportunities of achieving success in school. Teacher-imposed labels can lead to corresponding behaviour of students - if a student is labeled as a “hard worker” he or she is more likely to work hard.
What does pierre bourdieu (cultural theory) say about education?
Schools reproduce existing power relations because teachers will reward students who most closely emulate the standards of the dominant culture. And because the school system is oriented toward and upper middle class culture, students from there are more likely to succeed.
What does annette lareau (cultural theory) say about education?
Upper middle class children’s home lives more closely match the language, structure, and organization of schooling than those of their working class counterparts. Upper/ middle class parents have a greater understanding of how school processes work and are able to condition their children to work within the system and succeed.
