What is the GNC scale and what is it used for?
1:5,000,000, has worldwide coverage, typically used for ling range inflight navigation at high altitudes.
What is the ONC scale and what is it used for?
1:1,000,000, has worldwide coverage. Designed for military low level altitude navigation as well as planning jntel briefs, plotting and wall displays.
What is the JNC scale and what is it used for?
The JNC scale is 1:2,000,000, coverage is limited to the northern atmosphere. Used for preflight planning and enroute navigation by long range aircraft.
What is the TPC scale and what are its uses?
1:500,000, it is the MINIMUM scale for LOW LEVEL FLIGHT.

1:250,000 the purpose of the JOG is to provide ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE WITH A COMMON LARGE-SCALE GRAPHIC.
What is a TLM?
An objective area chart, its scale is 1:50,000. Used for preflight planning.
What do you call the lines connecting areas of like elevations?
Contour lines.
How are shadows cast by elevation shown on charts?
Shading
Can aerial photography be used as a chart supplement for objective area planning?
Yes.
What does UTM stand for?
The Universal Transverse Mercator
How many zones does UTM divide the earth into?
It divides it into 60zones of 6 degree bands of LONGITUDE!
How does the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) split the latitude lines?
Each UTM zone is segmented into 20 LATITUDE bands, each 8 degrees high.
What are the first and last letter used in MGRS and what two letters are emitted?
The first letter is C, the last is X and letters “I” and “O” are omitted.
Why are “I” and “O” emitted?
