SNS & PSNS Flashcards
1
Q
What is the sympathetic nervous system
A
Activated when stressed, in danger or physically exercising
Has thoracolumbar outflow from CNS
Ganglia located ventral & lateral to spinal cord
Long pre-G fibres
Short post-G fibres
effect:
Heart - Accelerate heart, vasoconstriction
Lungs - Bronchodilation
2
Q
What is the parasympathetic nervous system
A
Activated during normal day-to-day activities (digestion, metabolism etc.)
Craniosacral outflow
Ganglia located in head, neck, trunk & close to abdominal/pelvic organs
3
Q
What is the autonomic nervous system
A
Neural regulation of ANS occurs by reflexes
Reflexes called autonomic reflexes
Function is to maintain homeostasis
Heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion
