Heart Flashcards
Describe the mammalian heart
Dual chambered
Left heart pumps oxygenated blood
Right heart pumps deoxygenated blood
Prevents mixture of oxygenated & deoxygenated blood
Arteries go away from heart
Veins return to heart
Define systole & diastole
Systole = contraction
Diastole = relaxation
What is ventricular systole
Ventricular systole = contraction of ventricles
Results in cardiac output
Atrioventricular valves close
Source of lub sound
What is ventricular diastole
Ventricular diastole = relaxation of ventricles
Results in ventricular filling
Semi-lunar valves close
Source of dub sound

describe blood flow through the heart
- Deoxygenated blood from body returns to right atrium via superior & inferior vena cava
- Blood flows through tricuspid valve into right ventricle
- Contraction of right ventricle forces blood through pulmonary valve into pulmonary artery
- Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs where it is oxidised
- Oxygenated blood returns to left atria via pulmonary vein
- Blood flow through mitral valve into left ventricle
- Left ventricle contracts forcing blood through aortic valve & into aorta
- Aorta carries blood from heart to rest of body
