What is SNHL?
Deafness due to failure of the hair cells to detect sounds in the inner ear.
Hearing is worse when with SNHL?
Worse in the presence of backghroiund noise?
What do Renne and Webers show in SNHL?
Rinne’s positive.
Webers goes to ear where there is not a problem (other ear)
Audiomertyr, no air bone gap, symmetrical high frequency loss.
Mainstay of treatment of sensorineural HL?
Hearing aids.
What is presbycusis?
Gradual reduction in hearing with age.
Particular difficulties with background noise.
What is a vestibular schwannoma?
Benign nerve sheath tumour of CN 8 that grows at the cerebello pontine angle.
What would bilateral vestibular schwannomas siuggest?
Neurofibromatosis type 2.
How does a vestibular schwaannoma present/
SNHL with distortion of sound and tinnitus.
Unsteadiness, vertigo and deep earache,
Facial pain, palsy or parasethaia,
UNilateral headache,
Investigation is CT head.
What type of hearing loss does head injury cause?
Can cause a mixed hearing loss.
