How does otitis external present?
Pain and itch in ear canal. Minimal watery discharge.
O.E tragal tenderness, erythema, narrowing of acne.
Management of otitis external:
All patients : aural care.
Mild = topical acetic acid 7/0
Moderate = topical otomozise (dezamthason, neomycin[antibiotic] and acetic acid)
Most common causes of otitis media?
Viral = most common cause
Bacterial = strep pneumoiae or H influenza.
1st line antibiotics for OM?
1) Amoxicillin
2) Clarithromycin
Should antibiotics always be given in OM?
No, typical length of illness is 4 days.
Only give if child < 2, discharge, bilateral infection, multiple marked symptoms.
Not always given as benefit from taken them is slight i.e. does not improve deafnesss.
If the tympanic membrane ruptures the majority of the time it heals on it’s own, if it doesnt what operation is performed?
Myringoplasty.
Chronic OM infection can result in what complications?
Facial nerve palsy.
Intracranial abscesss.
Mastoiditis (Otalgia, tender mastoid, protruding auricle)

Management of mastoiditis ?
IV Tazocin +/- removal of mastoid process.
Management of supraglottis ?
IV ceftriaxone
