How does otitis external present?

A

Pain and itch in ear canal. Minimal watery discharge.

O.E tragal tenderness, erythema, narrowing of acne.

Management of otitis external:

A

All patients : aural care.

Mild = topical acetic acid 7/0

Moderate = topical otomozise (dezamthason, neomycin[antibiotic] and acetic acid)

Most common causes of otitis media?

A

Viral = most common cause

Bacterial = strep pneumoiae or H influenza.

1st line antibiotics for OM?

A

1) Amoxicillin

2) Clarithromycin

Should antibiotics always be given in OM?

A

No, typical length of illness is 4 days.

Only give if child < 2, discharge, bilateral infection, multiple marked symptoms.

Not always given as benefit from taken them is slight i.e. does not improve deafnesss.

A
