Describe patches
Apply to dry skin - 1 per day. Nicotine absorbed through skin. 8-12 week treatment
Reduction should not commence until week 6
Describe gum
Chewed until taste becomes strong - parked in side of mouth
Repeat 20-30 minutes, 12-15 per day
Mouth irritation, nausea and dislike of the taste
8-12 weeks
Describe microtab
Place under tongue - dissolve
Nicotine absorbed through roof of mouth
8-12 week
Describe quickmist
Insert nozzle into mouth. 64 sprays per day. Nicotine absorbed through lining of mouth
8-12 week
Describe nasal spray
Gently insert nozzle into nostril. 64 sprays per day. Nicotine absorbed through the fine membranes of the nose and sinuses. *-12 weeks
Describe inhalator
6-12 capsule a day. Nicotine vapour released into mouth and absorbed.
What are cautions with NRT
Care with acute cardiac events
Watch blood sugars in diabetics
Care with inhalation in COPD
Caution in severe hepatic/renal impairment
What is the course for varenicline
1-2 weeks before stop:
Start
Stop date: stop smoking, continue varenicline
12 weeks: complete course
What are the side effects of varenicline
Caution in mental illness, but association with suicidal ideation not proven
Main side effect is nausea
