Metabolic Acidosis Flashcards
What is metabolic acidosis
Low arterial blood pH in conjunction with a reduced serum HCO3 (normal 24-28 mmol/L concentration
What is the basolateral side
Interstitium
What is the apical side
Lumen side
What is cation
Positive
What is anion
Negative
What is the anion gap
Identifies an abnormal increase in plasma anions
An increased anion gap indicated an increase in the concentration of anions other than chloride or bicarbonate
What are the measured cations
Na+ and K+
What are the measured anions
HCO3- and Cl-
What are the causes of metabolic acidosis
GOLDMARK mnemonic: Glycols, oxyproline, L-lactate, D-lactate, methanol, aspirin, aspirin, renal failure, ketoacidosis
What is lactic acidosis
result of lactate production from anaerobic respiration
What is ketoacidosis
Result of ketone production, fat metabolism
Main causes are diabetes, alcohol, and starvation
What exacerbates ketoacidosis
Dehydration causes hypovolemic shock and exacerbates ketoacidosis
What is the normal value for the anion gap
8-12 mmol
What is increased anion gap acidosis
Increase in acid
Increase in anion gap reduces HCO3- as a result of increased acid production (bicarbonate binds H+)
What is normal anion gap acidosis
bicarbonate loss
Increase Cl- as a result of bicarbonate loss so anion gap remains same
