Materials that react with external stimulus or input
Alter functional or aesthetic properties in response to changing environment
Stimulus:
- heat
- pressure
- moisture
- pH levels
- etc 
Examples:
• thermochromic pigments
• photochromic pigments
• shape memory alloys
