Smart Materials Flashcards
What is a smart material?
A material whose physical properties change in response to an input
What are all the inputs for smart materials?
Light
Temperature
Pressure
pH
What is Thermochromic Pigment?
Reacts to temperature, changes the colour of the material.
What is Photochromic Pigment?
Ink reacts to UV light by darkening.
What is Photochromic Pigment used in?
Sunglasses or other glass products.
What is Thermochromic Pigment used in?
Used in thermometers or other heat indicating items.
What is Phosphorescent Pigment?
Able to glow in the dark, absorb light energy and store it to then release it over a period of time.
What is Phosphorescent Pigment used in?
Fire safety signs, watch faces.
What is shape memory alloy?
When heat or an electrical current passes through the wire contracts.
What is Shape Memory Alloy used in?
Dental braces, glasses frames.
What is a Piezoelectric Material?
They produce an electrical current when they are placed under mechanical stress, it is also reversible so can change the shape up to 4%.
