Composite Materials Flashcards
Define the term Composite
Combination of two materials with different physical and chemical properties.
What is aluminium composite board used for?
Indoor and outdoor signage.
What is Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) used for?
Boats, Jet skis, Vehicle body work
What is Glulam used for?
Bridges, Engineered beams
What are the characteristics of Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP)?
CFRP is a extremely strong and light fibre it has a high weight to strength ratio and stiffness.
Name a fibre reinforced composite material.
CFRP or GRP
What are some benefits of composites?
Improved product performance
Enhancements of physical and/or mechanical properties
Ability to be moulded into a variety of 3D forms
What is tungsten carbide used in?
Jewellery
Armour-piercing rounds
Cutting tools
How is concrete formed?
It is a mixture of broken stone or gravel, sand, cement, and water, which can be spread or poured into moulds and forms a stone-like mass on hardening.
How can concrete be made stronger?
It can be reinforced using steel grids or rebars, allows it to span large distances while staying strong.
What is Fibre Cement made up of?
Cellulose Fibre: acts as a filler
Portland Cement: binds the ingredients
Sand: creates all weather performance and resilience
Water: dissolves the wood pulp; activates and hardens cement
Who made Fibre Reinforced Cement (FRC)?
James Hardie
What are chemical additives used for in some composites?
They make the material:
Robust & Stable
Weather resistant
Lightweight
Eco-Friendly
