Small intestine and large intestine Flashcards
What are the sections of the small intestine?
The large intestine?
Small intestine: duodenum, jejunum and ileum.
Large intestine: Caecum, colon, rectum.
Anus is separate.
What level is the duodenum located?
Curves around L2
What are the different parts of the duodenum?
Is it retroperitoneal?
Mostly retroperitoneal apart from the 1st and 4th parts
What parts of the small intestine are seen here?
Jejunum and the ileum.
What is the lymphoid tissue in the ileum?
Peyers patches
What is the name of this structure?
Ileocecal valve
What are the names of the different positions that the appendix can sit in?
Which parts are retroperitoneal?
Where is fibre digested?
Descending and ascending are retroperitoneal. You also lose peritoneum around the rectum (end of sigmoid colon).
Fibre is digested in the caecum.
Why are each of these structures clinically important?
What are the structures?
Help in identifying the colon.
Taenia coli: condensed 3 band structure of longitudinal smooth muscle. Pouches (circled) are formed because of the lack of longitudinal muscle and are called haustra.
Appendicies epiploicae are bits of fatty tissue associated with the large intestine.
What is the function of this structure?
How long is the rectum and the anal canal?
Is there mesenatry
Pelvic diaphragm, control passage of contents of fluid out of abdominal cavity.
No mesentary=rectum (12 cm long). Mesentary=sigmoid colon.
Anal canal=3-4 cm long.
What is the point in the rectal folds?
The point in the anus?
Rectal folds allow faecaes to collect and air to pass through.
The anus is all about maintaining contenance.
External anal sphincter and internal to manage contenance.
