What are the 3 parts called that the small intestine is divided into?
Duodenum, jejunum and ileum
What are the 4 parts of the duodenum?
Superior, descending, horizontal and ascending
Describe the superior part
Travels slightly superiorly and posteriorly at the side of the vertical column at the level of L1
Describe the descending part
Travels inferiorly over part of the kidney to L3
Describe the horizontal part
Travels medically to the left, crossing the aorta at L3
Describe the ascending part
Travels superiorly on the left of the aorta to L2 where it becomes the jejunum
What does the descending duodenum receive?
Further digestive secretions from the liver and gallbladder via the common bile duct and the pancreas via the main pancreatic duct
Where does the jejunum begin?
At the duodenojejundal junction, to the left of the L2 vertebrae
What are the jejunum and ileum anchored to?
They are anchored to the posterior body wall by the messengers and are the primary site of nutrient absorption
