What are the mouth and tongue covered by?
Stratified squamous epithelium with an underlying sub mucosa containing salivary glands
What are the 3 main types of salivary glands?
Parotid, submandibular and sublingual
What do the submandibular glands secrete?
Both serous and mucosa saliva
What do the parotid glands secrete?
Serous saliva
What do the sublingual glands secrete?
Mucosa saliva
Where is saliva produced?
It is produced in the acini of saliva glands by active filtration of ions from blood and has a similar composition of Extracellualr fluid
Where is the composition of saliva modified?
In the ducts within glands to make it appropriate for requirements
What can change the composition of volume of saliva secreted?
Autonomic stimulation
What does parasympathetic stimulation produce?
A large volume of watery saliva
What does sympathetic stimulation produce?
A small amount of mucous salvia
What are the functions of saliva?
Lubrication, digestion, protection, antibacterial, thirst stimulation, speech and absorption in the mouth
What are the 4 muscles of mastication?
Temporalis, masseter, lateral pyterygoid, medial pterygoid
What do the muscles of the tongue and cheeks do?
Aid pulverisation and bonus formation
What is a muscle in the cheeks and tongue?
Buccinator muscle
