Neurovascular Supply Flashcards
What branches of the abdominal aorta is the GI tract supplied with?
The coeliac trunk, the superior mesenteric artery and the inferior mesenteric artery
Where does the coeliac trunk arise from?
It arises from the T12 vertebral level
Where does the superior mesenteric artery leave the abdominal aorta?
At the lower boarder of L1, inferior to the coeliac truck
Where does the inferior mesenteric artery leave the abdominal aorta?
At L3
What foregut structures does the coeliac trunk supply?
Stomach, superior duodenum, liver, gallbladder, spleen and pancreas
What does the coeliac trunk immediately split into?
3 branches - common hepatic, left gastric and splenic arteries
What is the stomach supplied by?
The left and right gastric arteries and the left and right gastropiploic arteries
What is the superior duodenum supplied by?
The superior pancreaticduodenal artery
What is the liver supplied by?
The left and right hepatic arteries
What is the gallbladder supplied by?
The cystic artery - the branch of the right hepatic artery
What is the spleen supplied by?
The splenic artery
What is the pancreas supplied by?
The superior pancreaticoduodenal
What does the superior mesenteric artery supply?
The midgut structures - the small and large intestine from the inferior duodenum to the proximal Half of the transverse colon
What does the pancreaticoduodenal artery supply?
Supplies the inferior part of the duodenum and pancreas and anastomoses with its superior counterpart
Where does the pancreaticoduodenal artery arise from?
The superior mesenteric artery
What so branches of the superior mesenteric artery form?
Large loops known as arcades in the mesentery - they supply the jejunum and ileum
What does the ileocolic artery supply?
Supplies the terminal ileum, caecum, vermiform appendix and proximal ascending colon
What does the right colic artery supply?
The distal ascending colon
What does the colic artery supply?
The distal transverse colon
What does the inferior mesenteric artery supply?
The hind gut structures - including the large intestine from the proximal transverse colon to the rectum
What does the left colic artery supply?
The descending colon. This artery anastomses with the middle colic artery of the superior mesenteric artery
What is the sigmoid Colon supplied with?
Sigmoid arteries
What is the superior rectal artery supplied with?
The proximal rectum
What is the distal rectum not supplied by?
The abdominal aorta
What is the distal rectum supplied with?
Branches of the internal iliac artery
Describe the blood that has flowed through the intestines
It is full of amino acids and monosaccharides as well as poisons and toxins that may have been absorbed
What needs to happen to the blood that has travelled through the intestine before it can be returned to the heart and lungs?
It needs to be filtered by the liver to remove waste and if necessary excrete or store absorbed molecules
Where does blood drain from the capillaries of the intestines to?
Into the superior and inferior mesenteric veins which joins the splenic vein to form the hepatic portal vein
What does the hepatic portal vein carry?
It carries deoxygenated blood full of absorbed molecules from the intestines to the liver
